Where can you get an OPK?

Ovulation prediction kits are available over the counter at most local drugstores, and are pretty cheap at around $20 each. Some people think that ovulation prediction kits are better than charting your basal body temperature, since with basal body temperature, you don’t know you have ovulated until after it has happened. With an ovulation prediction kit, you can tell when you are ovulating, as it happens, or even a few days before so that you will have time to prepare.

How does an OPK work?

If you have ever taken an at-home pregnancy test, you already have the basic idea of how an ovulation prediction kit works. Instead of detecting HCG in your urine like an at home pregnancy test, ovulation prediction kits detect levels of Luteinizing Hormone, or LH, in your urine. Right before you ovulate, your body has a surge of LH, and that surge is what ovulation prediction kits pick up. After that surge in LH is detected, you should ovulate within 36 hours.

How do you use an OPK?

Ovulation prediction kits are really easy to use. They are much like at home pregnancy tests in that you simply pee on the stick or some tests have strips that you dip into a container of urine to get an accurate reading. The results are usually pretty fast, within five minutes or so. There is usually a control band and a result band. The control band gives you the color to compare the result band to. If your results are the same color or darker than the control band, it means you are getting ready to ovulate within 36 hours. If your results are lighter than the control band, you have not ovulated for the month yet.

When to use an OPK?

The hardest part about taking an ovulation prediction kit is figuring out when to take one. It is best to test twice per day, since the LH surge happens so quickly, it can be hard to catch it sometimes. Keep testing each day, at the same time, two times a day, until you see the surge. You can begin at about Day 10 of your cycle.

When to time intercourse?

Once you see the surge, make sure to have sex within 36 hours to ensure the best chances of getting pregnant. Ovulation prediction kits can be a great choice for women who want to know when they are ovulating, since they are affordable, available over the counter, and easy to use.
