Anovulation means, literally, no ovulation. It means lack of ovulation, or ceasing ovulation. It is when a woman goes through her cycle, but no eggs are released during the cycle. If a woman has a cycle that is anovulatory, it means that there was no ovulation during that cycle. If a woman has several cycles where she does not ovulate, she can be diagnosed with chronic anovulation. Anovulation can be a common cause of infertility. Some experts say that it is responsible for as many as 40 percent of cases of infertility in the United States. However, anovulation is treatable in the majority of cases. There are several symptoms of anovulation, the most common being irregular periods. Women with anovulation may have very irregular periods, and some have no periods at all. Other symptoms can include little or no PMS symptoms or an irregular basal body temperature. Anovulation can also be characterized by either very heavy periods, or very light periods. If you have any of these symptoms, you might want to have your doctor check you out to see if anovulation is your problem. The tests that are done of anovulation include simple blood tests, pelvic examinations, and sometimes ultrasounds as well. The tests for finding out if you have anovulatory cycles are generally painless, and do not take long at all. Your doctor can do these tests to find out whether or not you are ovulating.
If your doctor determines that you do have anovulatory cycles, do not panic. There is treatment available for this condition, and it is often very successful and easy to reverse the effects of anovulation. Some cases of anovulation are treated very simply. By improving their lifestyle, many women are able to see a noticeable return to normal ovulation. Some of the lifestyle changes that your doctor might suggest include exercise, eating a healthy diet, gaining or losing weight, stopping smoking, and other simple lifestyle changes.
If these sorts of changes do not work, your doctor might move on to other forms of treatments. Your doctor might wish to move onto a fertility drug to see if it jumpstarts your ovulation. The most common fertility drug that doctors prescribe is Clomid. Clomid is usually very successful and has few side effects. As you can see, anovulation can be a cause of infertility, but it is usually easily treated and not a cause for long term concern.
