Causes of Missed or Late Period without Pregnancy

If you miss a period once in a blue moon, it is okay and you don’t have to worry about it. It is common and occurs in many women. Skipping a period may be termed as amenorrhea. Women who are trying to get pregnant may get excited only to find out that their period has occurred late and women who aren’t trying to get pregnant freak out and think that there is something wrong with their reproductive system. Since menstruation is a very important bodily function, skipping a period or having a late period can obviously get you worried. Missing a period very rarely is nothing to be worried about. Missing a period is a symptom of pregnancy but if you miss a period and discover that you are not pregnant, you may panic. Know that there may be numerous different reasons behind it. Stress

If you are too stressed mentally, it can affect your health in many ways. The hypothalamus may not work properly for a certain period of time. Improper functioning of hypothalamus is bad because it regulates the hormones responsible for menstruation. Thus, temporarily ovulation may not occur and you may skip a period. Once your stress comes down, ovulation will be restored and you will have your period again.

Contraceptives

If you are taking birth control pills, you may skip a period now and then. Note that even after you stop taking the pills, your periods won’t come back to normal immediately. It will take at least half a year for your body to start functioning properly. Thus, you shouldn’t worry if you are using contraceptive pills.

PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS can also cause amenorrhea or a missed period. PCOS is the result of very high levels of androgen and estrogen. For ovulation, the levels of progesterone and estrogen need to fluctuate. In PCOS, estrogen and the male hormone androgen are present in large amounts and that causes problems. One of the most common symptoms of PCOS is missed periods or very heavy periods in some cases. Infertility, obesity, and acne are other issues.

Tumors

A tumor in the pituitary gland can also cause you to miss a period. If you have a tumor – a noncancerous tumor – in the pituitary gland, the hormone prolactin is overproduced. More amounts of this hormone can lead to irregular periods. Medicines can usually fight the tumor and treat it but there are very rare cases in which surgery was required.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism can also lead to amenorrhea. When the thyroid hormone is not produced in enough quantities, hypothyroidism occurs. Because of thyroid disorders, you may have a number of hormonal issues, which can lead to a missed period.

Health problems

If you are underweight, your body may not be able to produce enough amounts of hormones and that can lead to a skipped period because ovulation does not occur. This problem is common in anorexic women, who barely eat anything. Also, if you exercise too much, you may have interrupted menstrual cycles.
