Ex Mets Executive Claims She Was Fired for Being Pregnant

Serious Suit

A former New York Mets executive has filed a lawsuit against the team and COO Jeff Wilpon — the son of team owner Fred Wilpon for reportedly being fired for being unmarried and pregnant. Leigh Castergine is the former head of marketing and ticket sales for the Mets, and her lawsuit was filed in a Brooklyn federal court last Wednesday. Castergine alleges team COO Jeff Wilpon was “morally opposed” to her becoming pregnant while single. She was terminated after reporting Wilpon’s inappropriate behavior to the team’s human resources department. Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

The Allegations

According to the New York Post: “He frequently humiliated Castergine in front of others by, among other things, pretending to see if she had an engagement ring on her finger and openly stating in a meeting of the Team’s all-male senior executives that he is ‘morally opposed’ to Castergine ‘having this baby without being married,’” the suit states.“Wilpon told her that, when she gets a ring, she will make more money and get a bigger bonus,” the suit states.Wilpon told Castergine that “something had changed” in Castergine after the birth of her child — “with still no ring on her finger,” the suit states. “Wilpon told her that she was no longer as ‘aggressive” as she used to be.” As for the “morally opposed” comment, here’s what happened. “I am as morally opposed to putting an e-cigarette sign in my ballpark as I am to Leigh having this baby without being married,” Wilpon said in a meeting over a proposed ad deal, according to the suit.

It Gets Worse

After the baby was born, Wilpon told her that something had changed with her, and she was no longer as “aggressive” as she used to be. Her complaints to human resources and legal staffers were blown off, the suit states. She gave birth in March and returned to the team in June when for the first time in her four years with the team, she was hit with negative evaluations. Wilpon told her that she wasn’t meeting ticket sales expectations for the out of contention team, but offered to let her remain through the end of the season if she promised to keep her mouth shut about the discrimination claims, the suit states. However, Castergine refused to take the deal, and had her lawyer email Wilpon and inform him that they would be taking him to court. She was fired three minutes later, according to the suit. Castergine also took several digs at the Mets organization in the lawsuit, noting that the organization “failed to field a winning team in six years,” “fans had … pledged not to attend any games until there was a change in ownership,” and comparing her job “to selling deck chairs on the Titanic.”
