False Negative Pregnancy Tests

False Negative Pregnancy Tests

Home pregnancy tests

Home pregnancy tests or better called, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) tests are pretty straightforward. If you see a positive sign, you are pregnant and if you see a negative sign, you are not pregnant. It is as simple as that. Or is it? Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

Taking the test

These tests are called hCG tests because they detect the presence of this hormone in the urine of the female. This hormone is released only after fertilization and its presence is a sure shot sign of pregnancy while its absence shows that you are not pregnant. The ideal time to take this test is only after you have missed your period. However, it is likely that you don’t want to wait until then. If you are too impatient, you should wait at least a fortnight after intercourse to take the test. These tests don’t guarantee 100% results. If you follow all the instructions on the kit and do it right, 97% of the times you will get the accurate result but it is important to remember that there is room for error. This is why a few kits have two sticks so that you can try again or take the test again after a couple of days just to be sure about the result.

The false negative test result

Sometimes you may get a false negative test and very rarely will you get a false positive. Thus, if you see even faint traces of signs towards positive, know that you are pregnant. Presence of hCG when you are not pregnant is almost impossible. However, false negative tests are not all that uncommon. You may have taken the test wrong or you may have taken it too early. This can show you a negative result even though you are pregnant. Hence, it is ideal that you take the pregnancy test again after 3-4 days just to be sure. There are also other reasons behind a false pregnancy negative test and the most common ones have been mentioned here.

When the test is taken early

As aforementioned, if you take the test too early you are more likely to get a false negative. Impatient women should go for highly sensitive home pregnancy test kits that will give you the right results even if you take the test early. There are also chances that even though you are pregnant, the secretion of hCG has not begun yet. For an increase in the level of hCG, your body needs time and it is important that you give it the time frame if you want the right results. Highly sensitive kits are more expensive but they are also very accurate and relying on them is a better option.

When the test is taken wrong

Not holding the stick properly while urinating or not dipping it enough in the urine can also yield you negative results. This is the reason why you should read the instructions carefully and learn how to hold it and dip it so that you don’t get false results.

Missed reaction time

Some women wait too long before reading the test result. This can also give you a false negative result. You should wait only for as long as is instructed and then check the result. If you let the stick sit like that for too long, the result will not be right.

If you get a negative result but ‘feel’ pregnant, the best advice would be to check again after four days at least. To be absolutely sure you may go to the doctor for a blood test too.
