Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) and Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT)

Fertility problems are pretty common today and there are a number of treatments available. There are drugs and supplements that you could use in order to give your fertility a boost and to increase your chances of getting pregnant. However, these fertility drugs and supplements don’t work for everybody. For some women, all these techniques fail and they have to work harder and spend more money to become parents. These women or couples have to go for more invasive methods in order to get pregnant. While IVF or in vitro fertilization is the most common method, know that it is not the only assisted reproduction method. There are many more methods that you could try out and among those, there are GIFT and ZIFT. These two methods are also pretty common.

If you are among those women who have failed to conceive and now need to look for fertility treatments, knowing about these two procedures will help you make a decision. Here is more information about each:

GIFT or Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer

GIFT or Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer, when compared to IVF or In Vitro Fertilization, is easier. It is far simpler and as a couple, you won’t have to face as much pressure. This procedure will work for you only if you have very healthy fallopian tubes. In this case, IVF is better in that it can be performed even if you have blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.

You will first be given general anesthesia and then this procedure will be performed on you. The best part is that there is no step that involves laboratory conditions. Everything occurs in the body itself. In this process the doctor will insert fertilized eggs in your fallopian tubes. There is no requirement of an embryo developed in the lab here. The reason why this procedure is ideal is because the embryo develops in the natural conditions and not in the laboratory conditions. This is actually the main purpose of this test.

Side effects of this procedure are extremely rare. The success rate of this method is similar to that of in vitro fertilization. About 29% success rate has been noted for GIFT.

ZIFT or Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer

ZIFT or Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer is recommended mainly for those women who are in their older age, usually above 40. They may find it impossible to get pregnant through any other means and that is where ZIFT is very beneficial.

For this procedure to be carried out, at least one fallopian tube must be healthy. In this method, the doctor will extract the egg from the ovary and then fertilize it in the lab conditions to form the zygote. That zygote will then be implanted into the fallopian tube of the woman. Usually, the zygote is kept under observation for one day before implanting it.

Laparoscopic instruments are used by the doctor to carry out this procedure. Just like in GIFT, the procedure is carried out under general anesthesia.

The success rate of ZIFT is significantly better than GIFT and IVF. 32% success rate has been noted in this method.

Conclusion

You will see that both these procedures are more or less similar. The only difference lies in the development of the embryo. In the first case, there are no lab steps while in the second case, the embryo develops in the lab.
