Hormones in Fertility Drugs

Hormones in Fertility Drugs

Fertility drugs are the first and the most basic fertility treatment that you receive. It is common knowledge that fertility drugs contain different types of hormones but not many people know what kind of hormones these are. It is fine to be curious. After all, you are taking the drugs and it is only fair that you know how they work and what they do once they are inside your body. Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

Working of fertility drugs
FSH or follicle stimulating hormone and LH or luteinizing hormone are the two main hormones of ovulation. Fertility drugs work like these two hormones so that ovulation in your body is carried out normally. Another important hormone for ovulation is GnRH or gonadotropin releasing hormone.
If any or all of these hormonal levels are disrupted, you will not be able to ovulate. Since most of the fertility problems are related to ovulation, fertility drugs are given to target this particular problem.
Here is more about each of these three important hormones:

GnRH or Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone

This hormone is extremely important because of the fact that it works to stimulate the master gland – the pituitary gland. Only when the pituitary gland is stimulated does it produce FSH and LH.
If this hormone is recommended for you, you will be given injections. The injections are not given initially. They are not the first line of treatment. Clomid or other medications are given to start you off. If they fail, GnRH injections are given. They may be given to men and women when GnRH is not produced naturally or is produced in lower amounts.

FSH or Follicle Stimulating Hormone

This hormone is present in both genders and is produced only when the pituitary gland is stimulated. In men, it ensures the proper growth of sperm and in women it ensures proper growth of the eggs. Thus, it is a very important hormone.
Having said that, know that too much FSH in the body is NOT a good sign. If the levels of FSH are elevated, it usually means that the number of eggs in your ovaries is less. A blood test will confirm the levels of FSH in the body. The level must be about ten. 25 is the limit. Anything above that mark spells danger. The sad part is that IVF is the only cure to this problem. IVF is invasive and very expensive.

LH or Luteinizing Hormone

This hormone is also secreted by the pituitary gland, just like FH. This hormone works to help the maturity and development of the egg. The levels of LH go up when it is time to ovulate. Thus, more levels of LH show that you are going to ovulate soon. OPKs or ovulation prediction kits are thus based on this hormone and its levels in the body. The levels of LH in the body can also be determined through a simple blood test.

Conclusion

Thus, these are the main hormones that are seen in fertility drugs. Each of them is highly important for fertility and adequate levels are very important. If you have fertility issues, your doctor will definitely check the levels of this hormone in the body.
