Ovulation is a very important phenomenon in the woman’s body. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that a woman’s fertility more or less revolves around ovulation. During ovulation, the ovaries release the mature egg and the egg travels to the fallopian tube. Now that the egg is ready to be fertilized, ovulation is considered as the most fertile time in the monthly menstrual cycle. If you have sex during this time, chances of getting pregnant will be more because the egg is ready to be fertilized and the sperm don’t need to wait and perish while they wait. During ovulation, the wall of the uterus also thickens assuming that the egg will get fertilized and be transferred to the uterus for implantation.
If the egg is fertilized, it implants into the uterine lining and you get pregnant. In forty weeks, you will have a baby. If the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining, which had thickened assuming that the fertilized egg will implant, will disintegrate. Once it is completely disintegrated, it is removed from the body. This removal is called menstruation or a period.
A few facts about ovulation and menstruation:
The lifespan of an egg is usually 24 hours. An egg can’t survive for more than 30 hours. After that, the uterine lining begins to disintegrate.
Normally, the ovaries release only one egg at a time. Sometimes, though, two eggs may be released. Thus, fraternal twins are born.
Each woman has an ovarian reserve or the number of mature eggs in the body. This number does not increase with time at any point of time. Instead, as the woman gets older, the number of eggs declines. Menopause is the stage where no eggs are left. That is the end of fertility in women.
On an average, the monthly cycle lasts for about 28 days. This may vary from one person to the other, though. In some women it may be shorter and in others it may be longer. Usually, ovulation occurs on the 14th day. This, again, may vary from anywhere between 12th day and 20th day.
There are numerous different factors that can affect ovulation and menstruation. These factors can be external or internal. Hormonal imbalance is one internal factor. Illnesses, stress, obesity, being underweight, bad lifestyle, unhealthy diet, etc. can also affect them significantly.
Ovulation and menstruation are not necessarily co-dependent. There are cases when ovulation occurs without menstruation and vice versa.
Ovulation cycle has two parts. There is the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase starts when the mensuration ends and continues until ovulation begins. Luteal phase begins when ovulation begins and continues until menstruation begins.
Now that you know all the basics of ovulation and menstruation, you can track ovulation. If you are trying to have a baby, having sex during this time will help the most.
