There are many medications on the market as I have said previously and these medications should be carefully thought over before beginning because they each come with pros and cons.
The first medication is Clomiphene Citrate which is more commonly known as Clomid and Serophene. These medications generally operate by increasing the amount of FSH the pituitary gland releases. This medication is usually a first choice in ovulation treatments. Clomiphene Citrate works to reverse absent periods, infrequent periods or long cycles. The most frequent dosage prescribed is 50 MG and can be taken daily. This dosage can increase but as the dosage increases the side effects do too.
Possible side effects include the following:
• Increased incidence of multiple birth
• Increased incidence of miscarriage
• Hot flashes, nausea, and breast tenderness
• Headaches or blurred vision
• Depression and mood swings
• Ovarian cysts and pelvic discomfort from over stimulation of the ovaries
The second ovulation medication available is known as Synthetic Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG). This is an injection used to trigger ovulation. This shot will be taken into the muscle. This medication is not normally prescribed on its own. Types of these name brand medications are known as Bravelle®, Follistim®, and Gonal-F.
Possible side effects include the following:
• Increased incidence of multiple birth
• Increased incidence of miscarriage and premature delivery
• Breast tenderness, swelling, or rash at injection site
• Mood swings and depression
• Hyper stimulation syndrome which includes enlarged ovaries, abdominal pain and bloating
The third medication available is known as Human Menopausal Gonadotropins (hMG). This is another type of injection that contains two things: LH and FSH. Human Menopausal Gonadotropins work to make the ovaries produce multiple eggs in one cycle. This is the most common use as a treatment. The name brand drugs are Menopur and Repronex. The possible side effects are the same as the previous medication.
Another option for ovulation medication is known as Bromocriptine and Cabergoline. This is a medication in pill form. This drug is mostly used to reduce the prolactin released by the pituitary.
There is a large variety of ovulation medications. These medications work differently depending on the patient because each person is different. Please take into consideration that the medication comes with pros and cons and should be weighed efficiently.
