Premature Ovarian Failure

Premature Ovarian Failure

Premature ovarian failure is the loss of the hormone estrogen, when eggs will not release properly causing infertility and loss of the use of your ovaries prior to 40 years of age. This is sometimes referred to as premature ovarian insufficiency. This means you may have sporadic irregular periods for years, you may even become pregnant in that time. Symptoms of POF

Symptoms of this condition include the following.

-hot flashes
-night sweats
-vaginal dryness
-difficult concentrating
-lower libido
-irregular or skipped periods

The importance of estrogen

Since estrogen is important in every female, it is very important that you seek medical attention if you go three months without a period. As nice as that sounds, you may suffer bone loss because of the loss of estrogen and may need a prescription to make up for that hormone.

Why does it occur?

There are really only two reasons that your ovaries would begin to lose their function. These are follicle dysfunction and follicle depletion. Depletion comes from the outside factors, chromosomal things you were born with or from toxins (ie. chemotherapy or radiation). Dysfunction is all inside such as an autoimmune disease that may have attacked your ovary. Your doctor may run tests to determine which happened to you. While the above listed can be causes for your ovary failure, age can be as well. If you are between 35 and 40 your risk nearly triples for premature ovarian failure. Also, family history, if there is a strong history of other females in your family line suffering from the same problem; it makes your chances highly likely as well.

Problems associated with POF

Once this has happened, your doctor may discuss what could happen next. Women who have this happen usually have a few “complications” that need to be addressed. Depression or anxiety; this can be treated with therapy sessions or medication. Osteoporosis can be aided with dosages of estrogen. While the most troubling cannot be fixed with a simple medication, infertility.

Tests that have to be run

Now that you are speaking to your doctor about the problem, he or she will run a few tests to be sure that it is indeed premature ovarian failure. Not to worry, this will usually be blood tests where they will check for multiple things; such as:

-pregnancy
-follicle stimulating hormone
-Luteinizing hormone
-Serum estradiol test
-karyotype

Alternate treatment options

Once tests have been completed, your doctor may put you on medication to help with the estrogen production or calcium supplements. Sadly, there is no cure for infertility in this case. You may seek help to grieve over this loss, or you may look at your other options such as in-vitro fertilization.

Above all else, cope with the thought of not having your own child. Look into adoption, weight your options. Speak to your doctor, he or she may be able to direct you to a specialist for fertility treatments of IVF.
