What does progesterone do?

Progesterone is secreted by the body to help it prepare for the implantation of the fertilized egg. Once the egg is implanted, the placenta tells the body to begin producing more progesterone, so that the egg or growing fetus is not rejected by the body. When you ovulate, your body increases its progesterone levels dramatically to make sure that the egg is protected.

Progesterone and ovulation

If you get pregnant during ovulation, the placenta will take over telling the body how much progesterone it needs to create. If you do not get pregnant during ovulation, your body will begin to rapidly drop its progesterone levels and that is when you will get your period. If you are pregnant and your progesterone levels drop dramatically during the first few weeks of pregnancy, it can even cause a miscarriage.

Low progesterone levels

If your progesterone levels are too low, you can really experience a lot of problems ovulating or with getting pregnant in general. Some symptoms of low progesterone can include thinning hair, headaches, skin disorders, acne, bloating, and constipation, etc. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you might want to ask your doctor to check your progesterone levels.

How to increase levels naturally

If it is determined that low progesterone levels are a possible cause of your infertility or problems getting pregnant, don’t be alarmed. There are many steps that you can take to increase your progesterone levels. There are many natural courses of treatment that you can try first to see if you can increase your progesterone levels. One of the most important things you can do to improve progesterone levels is to quit smoking. Just stopping smoking by itself can really improve your progesterone levels on their own. Also, doing things like changing your diet and getting enough exercise such as yoga can also naturally improve your progesterone levels.

Other options to increase levels

If these natural courses of treatments don’t seem to work for you, your doctor can give you other options to try. One of the best options for increasing progesterone levels is by using a progesterone cream. The cream is really easy to use; it is just a lotion that you apply to your body. If you don’t see an improvement from the creams, there are pill forms of progesterone treatment that can be beneficial as well. Your doctor will be able to help you decide which one is best for you.
