Probably one of the worst parts of being a female, in my opinion honestly, has to be ovarian cysts. They develop unannounced and sometimes without any reason. You may or you may not feel them there. You may or may not feel them rupture. However, the only one that I have ever had was a pain- literally! We will get on to my story later in this, but for right now, let us focus on what it is and how it happens and if it affects your fertility. Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here
By definition on the Mayo Clinic website “Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets within or on the surface of an ovary.” Sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong! How do they get there? Does something specific cause them? Are there different types? Do they just “go away” or need to be removed? Let us explore this from question one.
Well honestly that just depends. Sometimes they can be caused by specific medications mixed with your body chemistry causing welts on your ovaries. Mine was due to the birth control I was on at that time. Others can be developed from follicles continuing to grow after an egg has passed, and then it attaches itself to the ovary where it grows until it decides it is done and goes away.
Sometimes nothing at all causes them other than your normal cycle. There are different types of cyst:
-Corpus Luteum Cyst
These are all different types of cysts that are formed that you cannot control formation of. While others can be formed from things such as medication; there is not a specific “type” for those cysts.
In most cases they do just “go away” and do not need to be surgically removed. Your doctor will usually take note of how large one is (only if it is causing problems) and at that point he or she will try to keep an eye on it, maybe once every 6 weeks. If it does not shrink in size or gets larger over a matter of 3 months they may decide to remove it via surgery. In some cases they rupture, you read that right, they burst open. If you are unaware that you have a cyst and this happens your initial reaction will be to go to the hospital because something is “very” wrong, only to find out you will be fine as long as the bleeding stops. This is what mine did!
My personal input in this whole topic, I am sure I have had some before that particular one but those I didn’t feel, this one I did. I had the IUD (Inner Uterine Device) as a form of birth control, it was great, nope that would be a lie, and it was horrible. But that is a different topic for a different day. Once my cyst grew from this I had the IUD removed and a vaginal ultrasound performed to check things out. They found what I was told was “a really large cyst around your left ovary.” Oh lovely, this explains the cramps on that side and the heating pad I had been sleeping with for almost a month. Six weeks later I was to return to have it checked for size by another ultrasound. At week 5 and 2 days I went to use the restroom before bed and could not get off the toilet. I was doubled over in severe pain screaming and crying out in pain. My husband ran to my side with this sheer look of horror, he helped me to the bed and drugged me up on ibuprofen, muscle rub on that area of my stomach and a very hot heating pad. I cried myself to sleep that night. When I awoke the next morning I was bleeding a little bit, but not a lot and was scared to death of trying to get out of bed, I sat up, stood up, got dressed and was in complete relief of any pain. I called the doctor and got in that day. The cyst had ruptured the night before for the most part, it was just a tiny bump now and that was due to the “healing” as I was informed. My ovary got to remain intact and now I am pain and birth control free.
I cannot stress enough to you how important it is to seek medical help if you feel those sharp piercing pains. In some cases when a cyst ruptures an infection can set up, causing more problems for you in the long run.
